What gadget can’t you leave at home?
During May we ran a competition to win an emergency outdoor charger, once charged (before you leave!) the charger carries around enough spare power to recharge your favourite devices when you’re off the grid… or just not near a power socket. Using the charger you can give your phone a complete charge, or top up larger devices with a partial charge. The device is compatible with any device that can be charged via USB.
As is customary now with our competitions we like to ask a question to get to know you all a bit better, in the past we asked you what was your favorite national park and your favourite outdoor activities? This time, as the prize was gadget related, we wanted to know what your favourite gadget to take on an adventure is? It could be any type of gadget except your phone… because we had a feeling everyone might put phone, and that wouldn’t make for a particularly interesting chart!
So what is the nations favourite gadget?
There wasn’t much of a surprise that the top result was Camera, we have some beautiful and photogenic countryside – so we should all be taking more photos of it! The more interesting results came after the top, we were a bit surprised that more people don’t depend on a handheld GPS device – perhaps we’re all still using our OS maps and compasses (which you should always have with you regardless) – although we suspect a lot of you might be using a maps app on your phone!
Our infographic below shows the most popular gadgets…
It’s interesting to see an increasing number of gadgets that weren’t around a few years ago feature strongly in the results. Go-Pro or action cameras are becoming a serious contender followed fairly closely by Fitbits (which includes smartwatches and other brands), and it’s also encouraging to see a lot of people are using Solar to grab some free and clean extra power for their devices. Drones rank highly too and judging by all the wonderful footage on YouTube that’s an increasingly popular hobby.
We’d like to give a special shout-out to the dedicated few of you who can’t live without their ‘luxuries’, these brave souls take a coffee-maker with them on their adventures. We salute you! (PS: where can we get a portable coffee machine? ..asking for a friend!)
Have a look at the chart below for the full results and see where your favourite gadget came…
A note about the results, some similar gadgets have been combined e.g. radio/ipods/mp3 players are a good example where lots of single or low votes would have led to a very fragmented and less meaningful chart – so we added those scores together to create the podcast/music category. Likewise when brand names were mentioned those have been grouped together Fitbit=Apple Watch and GPS=Garmin=TomTom are some examples of that.
What do you think? Does your favourite gadget feature in the list.. if not tell us below in the comments what your must have gadget is when you’re off your adventures?
